Hiking
- Show that you know first aid for injuries or
illnesses that could occur while hiking,
including hypothermia, heatstroke, heat
exhaustion, frostbite, dehydration, sunburn,
insect stings, tick bites, snakebite, blisters,
and hyperventilation.
- Explain and show, where possible, the main points
of good hiking practices.
- Make a written plan for a 10-mile hike. Including
map routes, a clothing and equipment list, and a
list of things for a trail lunch.
- Take five hikes of 10 continuous miles each, on 5
days.
- Take a hike of 20 continuous miles in 1 day.
- Within a month of the last hike and after taking
all six hikes, make a short report of each of the
six hikes. Give dates, routes covered, weather,
and any interesting things you saw.

- Know where your main electric switch is. Replace
a fuse or reset the circuit breaker in an
electric entrance switch box.
- Waterproof a basement wall.
- Repair or put in drapery or curtain rods. Hang
draperies or curtains.
- Build or fix a stair or porch handrail.
- Repair furniture.
- Repair window screen or screen door.
- Repair sagging door or gate.
- Repair a picture frame.
- Clean a clogged drain or trap.
- Repair or replace a sash cord.
- Repair a leaky water faucet or valve.
- Repair a break in a cement walk, drive, garage
floor, or in an asphalt surface.
- Repair a fence.
- Recondition a garden tool.
- Repair an electric cord, plug, or lamp socket.
- Replace a broken pane of glass.
- Mend china.
- Paint or varnish a piece of furniture, door, or
part of the trim on a house. Clean brush
afterward.
- Repair a leaky hose.
- Caulk cracks or joints open to the weather.
- Put in fixtures for storing equipment or tools.
- Paint a wall or ceiling. Clean brush afterward.
- Lay floor tile or repair a worn spot.
- Solder.
- Put new cords in a Venetian blind.
- Build a workbench.
- Repair a flushing mechanism in toilet.
- Clean or replace a grass sprinkler water head.
- Install insulation in attic, wall or crawl space.

- Show how to care for a saddle and bridle. Name
the main parts of the saddle and the bridle.
- Show how to groom, pick out feet, and care for a
horse before and after riding.
- Describe the symptoms of colic. Describe four
other horse diseases.
- Name three main defects of feet and legs. Explain
how to detect them.
- Describe the right way to feed the horse that you
use for this test. Explain why the amount and
kind of feed will be changed according to the
work and the kind of horse it is.
- Show how to lead a horse from a stall, corral, or
field and saddle and bridle properly.
- On level ground, continuously do the following
movements. Do them correctly, at ease, and in
harmony with the horse:
- Mount.
- Walk the horse in a straight line for 60
feet.
- Make a half circle of not more than 16
feet in radius.
- Trot in a straight line for at least 60
feet.
- Make a half circle of not more than 30
feet in radius at trot.
- Canter in a circle 30 feet in radius on
proper lead.
- Change direction. Either reverse at
canter and change leads or come down to a
walk, reverse, and take up canter on
proper lead.
- Halt straight.
- Back up straight four paces.
- Halt and dismount.
- Show how to safely approach and remove a horse
from a stall in a fire.
